Manufacturers and product companies often struggle to deliver compelling product experiences to their customers because of physical limitations and high costs. This case study explores how innovative solutions and modern technologies can overcome these challenges, enabling companies to provide immersive and effective product demonstrations that enhance customer engagement and drive sales.

Machine and equipment manufacturers face growing challenges in showcasing their products at various venues—such as expos, booths, and stalls—due to physical constraints and significant expenses, including transportation costs, expo space fees, and cross-border challenges.

The aim is to revolutionize the product experience for engineering and manufacturing customers, enhancing sales and facilitating better decision-making for potential buyers in dedicated trade spaces like the German Center of Industry and Trade in Singapore. The experience center solution should demonstrate the significant impact it can have on their business, helping customers understand how this technology can benefit them.

Experience centers are designed to create a world-class experience for customers from diverse cultures and markets worldwide. Our goal is to deliver an exceptional experience that drives business impact for our customers. We aim to inspire them and showcase the art of the possible. Experience centers feature a series of immersive demos that allow customers to engage with, touch, and experience the solutions that the manufacturer is bringing to the market.

Room-scale experience

The spatial design was essential in providing a comprehensive room-scale experience for visitors in the physical space. This was achieved using a combination of 4K LED displays, 4K projectors, 4K TVs, iPads, and AR/VR devices.

Each display was assigned a specific role: LED displays for key product information, 4K projectors for graphic-rich content, TVs for promotional videos, and AR/VR devices for immersive experiences.

"When you have numerous advanced devices and gadgets around you, how do you seamlessly connect them to tell the story of a product, ensuring a continuous and cohesive experience throughout?"

Additionally, we offered users the option to map devices to the type of content they wish to display. For example, an LED display could be configured to show product information or stream data from an IoT sensor, based on the user’s preference. This feature adds dynamism and allows for a fully configurable experience.

Putting control in the user's hands

The team decided to develop an iPad application that functions as a remote control, capable of communicating with all configured devices. For instance, if a product video is playing on an LED display, the iPad remote app allows users to pause or skip the video using its control buttons. Additionally, the app provides an option to swap the content on a display with entirely new content. For example, users can replace product description information with a pre-configured dashboard showing IoT sensor data.

This remote app concept places the user at the center of the experience.

Choosing the right technology

Choosing a tech stack that operates seamlessly across all devices was crucial. With numerous displays, devices, and gadgets, it was essential that the technology remained independent of any specific device, as any device could be replaced at any time.

To address this, a Progressive Web App (PWA) was developed to run on all displays, including the iPad. This PWA features a messaging system that broadcasts state change notifications between devices. For AR/VR experiences, Unity was utilized.

In a room-scale experience, storytelling has a greater impact when users can engage with all elements of the story. While showcasing product information on the displays, users have the option to continue the experience on AR/VR devices. By selecting the AR/VR device through the Remote app, the relevant product experience is automatically loaded onto the AR/VR headset, allowing users to immerse themselves in machine operations, virtual walkthroughs, simulations, and more as soon as they wear the AR/VR headset.

Insights into app usage

The integrated analytical feature monitors user behavior across all devices, including the time spent on each product, the key product attributes evaluated, and the products favorited. This data is invaluable to product manufacturers, allowing them to initiate sales conversations with well-informed customers. Consequently, pre-sales discussions can commence at a more advanced level, such as Level 5 or 10, rather than starting from Level 0 or 1, which enhances overall sales.
